I've skied for more than 60 years, so the story of the origin and exploits of the 10th Mountain Division found a receptive audience in me. Jenkins does a fine job of introducing the key players, some of whom I was already familiar with thanks to my interest in skiing. His depiction of the early days -- from recruiting to the rigors of training and the earliest missions in the Aleutians -- were particularly compelling for me. The narrative and anecdotes focusing on the troops' involvement in the war in Italy graphically underscored the horrors of war, the soldiers' heroism and courage and the staggering price they paid. But what I missed, and had hoped to find, was how these skier soldiers gave birth to the modern ski industry in the U.S. There were pieces of that, but I was hoping to see the arc connecting then and now more completely drawn. Perhaps Jenkins is considering a second book on just that subject. If so, count me among those offering enthusiastic encouragement.

a very interesting book...not only was it an exciting time in our history, but it was a history lesson in itself...I love to read about history and this book was a very informative book on WW2...what I gathered from the book is the fact that we were lucky to win that war...it's amazing that we were able to overcome the incompetence of some of our leading Generals...

Review of "Climb to Conquer", "The Last Ridge" and "Fire on the Mountain (film)". Amazing story of skiers and mountaineers and how they came together to lead some of the final battles of WW II in Italy. Their post WW II experiences however are almost more amazing as so many of the leaders of the 10th Mt Division evolved into creating the downhill ski industry in North America, mountaineering and training in outdoor skills.The father of one of my fellow graduate students years ago was in the 10th Mt Division and I remember stories he told me of his Dad's founding role in a ski area in New Hampshire. I felt a strong connection to the men of the 10th Mt Division as I personally became involved in the post WW II evolution of skiing, mountaineering, backpacking and outdoor adventures in the early 1960s and 1970s. Activities I continue to this day as I enter my seventh decade.Highly recommend this book and the 1995 documentary about the 10th Mt Division.

Excellent story of guys who didn't get much credit.

Good read, especially good because when we we’re skiing Mt Batchlor Or. We met a group of men who were 10th Mtn in WWII.

Well written, page turner about the founders of the 10th Mountain Division. The resistance that was faced, to new ideas that almost stopped its formation by the established Military establishment. The original members, training and battle history of this then new fighting force.

Detailed history, written in conversational prose. Gritty and personal. Not just the story of the 10th, but of the individuals who made the 10th.From the lowliest to the "important" people. A helluva read!

Had heard of the 10th Mtn Division, but was unfamiliar with its history. Excellent read.
