From the Publisher

40 per cent of people with Mitral Valve Prolapse - a non-life-threatening structural dysfunction of the heart's mitral valve - also have MVP Syndrome, or dysautonomia. This imbalance of the autonomic nervous system can result in panic attacks, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, irritable bowel, and more. The cofounders of the Mitral Valve Prolapse Society have teamed up with a cardiologist to reassure readers that symptoms can be alleviated and the syndrome can be managed. They offer vital diet, nutrition, exercise, support and self-help recommendations, and teach readers how to advocate for themselves with health professionals.

This book is a must read for anyone with an elusive diagnosis and suffering from fatigue, dizziness, disorientation, vague gastrointestinal symptoms, heart palpitations, anxiety attacks or migraines. I suffered from debilitating symptoms for nearly a decade before I was correctly diagnosed with an autonomic disorder by Dr. Watkins (wrote the Foreword for this book.) With the correct diagnosis, he single-handedly gave me back my life after I had been unable to drive a car, walk more than 20 or 30 feet and live a normal life for nearly a decade.Today, I am seeking re-entry into the workforce, I drive and shop every chance I get, and I run 35 miles per week. But without the correct diagnosis, none of this would be possible. Imagine how many other cases of MVP/dysautonomia are undiagnosed and misdiagnosed, with patients suffering needlessly! Kudos to the authors for bringing awareness to MVP/dysautonomia with this well-written, informative reference guide.

This was a life changing book for me. I have mild mitral valve prolapse. This book helped me to understand my condition and to realize all those weird symptoms are part of the syndrome. Also gave copy to my daughter who also has condition. Wish that I would have had this book when I was in my 20's. Am now 64. Could have saved myself a lot of worry, doctor visits, money, and enjoyed life more. A must read.

This is a very good read for someone who has recently been diagnosed with Dysautonomia. Has lots of insight.

I read the entire book, and it was very informative. While reading the book, I noticed that my Doctor from The Autonomic Disorders/ Mitral Prolapse Center of Alabama, Dr. Phillips, was quoted in this book, and Dr. Phillip C. Watkins, the head of the team of doctors there, wrote the Foreword to this book. Thank you for all of you who put this information together. I know that every case is different, and not everyone has the same symptoms, but this disorder also effects several other body systems, not mentioned in this book, that would have been helpful to me. I know this book was written in 2002, which was 9 years ago, but being a nurse and having dysautonomia, myself, I think it would have been helpful to include autonomic vertigo, of which I had 2 severe cases with vomiting and total inability to function, cranial nerve problems; vestibular, ocular motor, and vagus nerve issues, urinary tract problems, interstitial cystitis,(with bleeding), spasms, and asthma, (with hemoptysis) and high blood pressure, (previous to this problem), in a book to follow. Because I had high blood pressure, after looking up this disorder several times, being a nurse, I kept thinking that this couldn't be my problem, but it most definitely was my diagnosis, along with Mitral Valve Prolapse, IBS, bladder issues, and Sleep Apnea!! I am still undergoing tests by my neurologist, hopefully, with no more diagnosis to add to my list. After dealing with all these issues for 13 years and finally finding some answers and treatment, a big thanks to all my Doctors in Birmingham, Dr. Pappas, Jr., ENT, Dr. Phillips, Autonomic Disorders/ Mitral Valve Center of Alabama, Dr. Adams, Sleep Disorder Clinic of Alabama, and Dr. John Riser, Alabama Neurology Associates, for all their time and expertise!! But most of all, I thank the good Lord for sending me to all the right doctors, sustaining me through it all, because I knew I wasn't crazy, and for my husband's support, as well!!"My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody! Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! I will give thanks to thee, O Lord, among the peoples, I will sing praises to thee among the nations. For thy steadfast love is great above the heavens, thy faithfulness, reaches to the clouds." Psalms 108:1-4Thanks,Joy,Kim Schneider

The reading of this book has helped make me more aware of my symptoms and that they are possible to deal with and survive. This book helps one understand their symptoms without as much fear and explains in great detail the anxiety component of this disabling disorder.

Had lots of relevant info, but since it has been out a while, some of this info is already available from other sources. Overall, I learned a few things from reading it that I didn't already know. If you were just finding out about your condition or looking for answers, this definitely is a helpful resource. If already fairly knowledgeable about Dysautonomia, I would still probably but it and read it for a better perspective.

I dont have mitral valve prolapse but do have tachycardia (fast heartbeat). I was surprised to learn that TC is related to MVP in that it is part of a systemic syndrome of over sensitivity to adrenaline and and imbalance in the autonomic nervous system that keeps people on hyperalert. This book was interesting, practicle and covered many of the related problems that are part of this syndrome such as fibromyalgia, gerd, ADD, some types of asthma. The book was practicle and covered nurition, sleep problems, panic attacks, medications and medications. You cant go wrong with this interesting and informative book on a topic that is related to a lot of other problems that I never would have thought possible.

This book contains helpful and informative material for those who wish to understand MVP better. I recommend it for suffers of mitral valve insufficiency.
