Do not buy this book for Kindle. There is a training map in the paperback version of the book that is not included electronically with the Kindle version so you cannot do all of the exercises the book includes.As far as the book is concerned, it is excellent and worthy of 5 stars! Very easy to read and comprehend and learn a very valuable skill. Having the paperback version does provide the training map and will help reinforce the concepts by performing the training exercises referenced within the chapters. I am goinng to contact Amazon and request they allow me to exchange the kindle version for the paperback.

As a complete novice, this is a skill that I've really been wanting to learn for awhile. I bought this book with the basic understanding that a compass points North. That's it. This book just isn't great (at least not anymore) for an individual trying to learn this stuff. It contains many group style exercises more suited for a course with a capable instructor.The exercises and the map are very frustrating to use for several reasons:1. The map does not have the meridian lines marked out into a grid pattern, stating that the user should mark those lines themselves. The issue comes in that if your lines aren't straight, then your bearing can be off by several degrees - which can translate into miles on a long enough trip. Not to mention, thick pencil lines obscure an already busy map. I kept coming up short on my answers because my rule drawn lines were just a fraction off. Very frustrating for a beginner. Then I discover that all USGS maps now have grid printed on them for the most accurate bearings possible. So much easier to deal with.2. The exercise questions were sometimes ambiguous or confusing. Telling me to mark heading 1/3 inch SSE of M in mountain leaves a lot of room for error. Again, I kept coming off by several degrees because my estimation of SSE was not the same as theirs. And they never bothered to show you a clear sample in the book. The pictures which are provided are so small, gray and blurry that I found myself using the magnifying bubble on the compass to see them.3. There's a lot covered in this book that just seems superfluous or included for the sake of content. I just got bogged down. Finally I put the thing away and went on YouTube. I've learned more using 20 minutes worth of videos than I did 3/4 way into this book.

Very easy to see why this is considered a classic for compass navigation. It's well-written, extremely easy to follow, and filled not just with practical know-how but also some great games to get one started. The included practice map is of great help, as are the "quizzes" that run throughout the book. Checking my own calculations against the answers in the back of the book was of great help. The only thing I noticed was that the page numbers referenced as containing the answers were off in my version. This was not a big deal, as it was quite easy to figure out by the headings. This book has given me the confidence to navigate off the beaten path. I have been an avid hiker for 30 years, but always on trails in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. Now I feel comfortable exploring the woods off the path, and know that I can make my way back to the trailhead. So happy that I finally learned how to really use map and compass skills together.

If you're learning map and compass, this is a very good book. It's focus is heavy on orienteering. I was disappointed it did not come with the practice map mentioned for the various lessons and quizzes. The answers are provided but without the practice map, supposedly in the back of the book, it did not help.

I would have written this review sooner but got lost in the woods and just found my way home.Seriously, this is a good easy to read book. By easy, I mean easy to comprehend. I can see why it has been around so long. Very useful for various skill levels. Highly recommend.

The paperback no longer includes the fold out map in the back. However, all the exercises are still based on that nonexistent map. Therefore, it is all theoretical and not at all practical. The text is badly dated as well. A “classic” I cannot recommend. Shame on Silva for keeping it in print only marginally.

So far it’s great! Except I should have bought a compass already 😂😂😂. I suggest you buy a compass with the book because the book gives you awesome exercises and expects you to learn I. The real world. It even has an included sample topological map.

Book is written very well. Easy to read and understand the author even provides basic stills and photos of setting up the compass on a map. This book even has the IOF legends for symbols. I would recommend this for basic hunting safety courses or anyone serious who wants to know in more detail. Highly recommended.
