This book is a major disappointment. Trying to get information requires wallowing through a mass of babble. If the author would just "cut to the chase" instead of all the extraneous nonsense then this book size could easily be halved and simplified. A manual should contain just pertinent information instead of all the worthless rubble that makes this more of a novel than a manual. Not only do you have to plow through a field of weeds but they are presented in a faded out font size which is apparently due to an ink shortage. There are a few tidbits of useful information buried in all the clap-trap but to obtain them is a backbreaking chore. There must be a better "manual" then this.
Nothing like a smart phone to make a person look dumb. The iPhone 6 is my first smart phone. Yes, I looked pretty silly trying to figure things out. I was able to do the basics; make calls and answer calls, text, and download an app or two. But I was an old fumbler with this phone. Then I purchased this book. I am amazed at what this phone can do. This book is well written and easily understood. I am learning everyday. I recommend this book for any iPhone user, advanced as well as novice.
I didn't use a lot of the functions in my iPhone 5. Mostly because I didn't know they existed. This is thorough, comprehensive and way better than Apple's user guide. Plus it lets you access a website with updates.Oh, and it is easy to follow and understand and is humorous in parts. It's a little intimidating when you first look through it, but I went through it systematically over several evenings. I found out what the new features were. What I wanted to use and what I wanted to turn off in the settings: Do I need all of the apps to run in the background or continuously update? Turn those functions off to maximize the battery life. How to avoid much of the tracking and the notifications. Turn them off. (WHY does the Maps app want access to my contacts list?) And so forth. There are in-depth chapters on the camera and video functions. Video messaging, apps, synching with your computer, iTunes, the cloud, music the web, Siri, pretty much everything you want to know to use this phone to it fullest potential.I highly recommend this book. I prefer the printed version so I can refer to it as I use the phone.
Very disappointing book: not only is the index inaccurate - and not just in the later pages, but throughout the book, but the light gray font is not easy to read for any length of time. I would return the book, but I received it on December 24, buying it in anticipation of my first iPhone (and first smartphone) which I got only several days ago. I think there is a 30 day return cutoff.I am sure that the content is good, although it is generic iPhone and not for the iPhone 6. For both the inexcusable index errors and the light-colored font, I think it's worth only average or 2.5 stars. That not being possible, I express my frustration with a 2 stars rating.
David Pogue is great as usual but it gets a one star because of the numerous references to other pages within the body of the text and in the index at the back of the book that are completely inaccurate and misleading. I purchased it even after reading reviews noting a problem as I love David Pogues work and have other Missing Manuals. I didn't belive it could be too bad. It is. If you are contemplating this book, be warned! (Is it possible the publisher and editor don't know that a manual and reference book by it's very nature REQUIRES accurate referencing??) The time wasted and the frustration involved hunting though page after page, sometimes finding the subject a few pages away but usually not even related to the section or chapter, is a disgrace. This book is not cheap. It should be removed from sale until it is updated, this problem resolved and those of us who purchased it at least provided with an accurate index to use - even if it means downloading it.
I have the paperback version of this product. I read the book and the contents are alright, however the index is completely messed up. Nothing is where it says it is in the index. One reason I purchased this book was for a reference manual. How can you find anything when you go to the index and it points you to the wrong location.I am very disappointed and I feel David Pogue should fix the index and send a new book to people like me who purchased this book as a reference manual.
Just as with Pogue's other "manuals", this is an encyclopediac reference, not really to be read, but rather to be used as an on-call resource when the darned device (iPhone in this case) wants to be used in some new, perhaps novel, perhaps frustrating way. If you tried to make use of all the capabilities buried in your iPhone, it would take you a long time to discover them all! Pogue does a nice job of taking the user by the hand and clarifying the "how to", and some times "why", and occasionally "why not". As far as I know, Pogue has no serious competition, at least, not at the level of his detail, when it comes to unraveling, not only what wonders are in that little box, but more important, how it call them up genie-like without the magic of a Persian lamp.
Very extensive, detailed, and helpful. This covers more than everything you'd want to know about the iPhone 5 and 6 (I got it for the 6). The lay-out is clear and effective, with illustrations, diagrams, and writing that is solid and to the point. I've found something I needed to know on virtually every page. While there are sections that are less useful than others, I refer to the book any time I need to know something I can't figure out -- and often just pick it up when I want to discover something for the heck of it. It's easy to follow and while the style is somewhat light, the information is packed tight and highly educational. The author finds virtually nothing to dislike about the iPhone, but that doesn't bother me. When I want to know stuff - this is the book that helps me out the quickest and with the greatest detail and clarity.
