I read this whole series in singles on Amazon Kindle and it was as good as one could hope for from any comic from the major 2 comic companies. Tom King is a good writer. He's not overly influenced by comic book tropes and as such makes stories that are a lot more mainstream that just so happen to have superheroes in them. It's a bit like Christopher Nolan in that sense only Tom King and the illustration crew aren't completely dower people.The basic premise is that the Omega Men are now a dangerous terrorist organization that fake a green lanterns death so that they can use him to over throw an evil empire. Basically, it's Green Lantern as a Jedi Knight versus an evil empire complete with a Star Wars style emperor figure. The difference is that Tom King brings way more John Le Carre and Battle of Algiers (the film) to the story than one would expect. It's full of bright shiny, candy glo spectacle that's covering up a sour core of a story. It's a smart move as the actual story itself feels depressingly real in the end. He isn't cheating either. He sows all the seeds early and doesn't cheat at any point.The illustration team hits the right notes well. The figures all are distinct from each other. It doesn't feel like there's a stock build that's stuck on repeat. The coloring is fantastic and focuses the eye well. Comics are interesting in that most pencillers and inkers don't take focus into account for drawing ones eye. It seems to be something of comics culture quirk where framing becomes the key guide for ones eye unlike most illustration, film, tv, etc. It makes the colorist extra important and they perform well here. I particularly liked the cover work by Toby Cypress. It's unconventional to say the least but it looks fantastic.I had to remove a star for a few reasons. The book becomes rushed. I don't think this is entirely Tom Kings fault. He's at the mercy of DC's willingness of publish a book. It could be that they told him there'd be more issues only to find out that they changed their minds. The 4 stars isn't a reflection on Tom King or the illustration team. They're working within the limits imposed on them and doing the best that they possibly can. It's not even really a reflection on DC who chose to keep publishing the book even when they didn't need to do so. DC actually stuck it's neck out and let them finish the book as much as they could. It's instead of reflection of the comics market that didn't support this book in favor of the newest Warren Ellis-will-soon-forget-this comic at Marvel, Image, etc or latest, greatest, most tumblr-y, and late Kelly Sue DeConnick book that's very very angry with you. Comics have a lot of new creative voices who should be rewarded instead of the ones with the most right thinking so to speak.

It took me a few weeks to slog through the first few issues. I was busy and distracted by other comics, but it still doesn't excuse Mr. King's failure to grab me in the early issues. The story gets better and better, as he slowly reveals the characters' motivations and the overall plot. Barnaby Bagenda's art is excellent, and the covers are truly exceptional (they are defaced propaganda posters).Depending upon your perspective, the Omega Men are either terrorists or freedom fighters. It is excellent science fiction, as it can be easily applied to our 21st century world. The characters are interesting and well-fleshed out. The only returning character from the DC Universe is Kyle Raynor, who is handled as well as I've seen him used (and I've read ALL of Geoff John's Green Lantern run).This is both going to reread well and age well. A strong compliment indeed.

The writing is phenomenal. The main idea imo is about what separates good from evil, and if it's about your intentions or your actions. It's a very thought provoking book, and i related to a lot of the characters. I loved the sci-fi elements, and the action was great. The characterization was so complex. I mean seriously even the planets felt like they had personalities.The art is stunning! I think it complements the story very well. It's similar to some image books. But also watchmen in terms of paneling.This is honestly one of the best comics ever and it's very accessible, i'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Evoking Watchmen is maybe too much of a trope now when discussing a lofty piece of comic. I'm almost certain that I haven't done it in a review but it seems appropriate here.The 9 panel structure is the easiest comparison but the story and characters is really what makes this book something more, something greater. I came into this book basically knowing nothing and I wouldn't want this review to take away from any of the elements of this book. Just know that the characters are fighting against an authority with Kyle Rayner coming in the middle to try to conjur up peace between the two sides.This book is dark with no clear good and bad guys. The characters make justifications for their decisions and things don't go as planned. It's as thrilling as it is a look into humanity's thoughts and moral conundrums.

Good, ambitious and interesting story. Good Art - however I found the bright color palette and visual style of the art, worked at cross-purposes to what is a very dark, drama, clearly intended to have parallels to the intractable, multi-sided, military, economic, religious and cultural conflicts plaguing the contemporary Middle East. A muted palette, more realistic drawing style, might have served the story better.

One of the most thought-provoking and emotionally-compelling comic book or graphic novel I've ever read. Tom King is an exceptionally gifted writer with a unique voice and a true paragon of writers and authors in any medium. I'm looking forward to his future works. The Omega Men shines a nice light on Kyle Rayner, but even readers new to the Green Lantern Corps or even DC in general can dive right into this series. I hope he makes a follow-up to this series!

Omega Men is an incredible read. Taking place in the far reaches of space, White Lantern Kyle Rayner is summoned to settle a dispute, but he is soon dragged into a war along with its all of its political machinations. Tom King's story and characters are all incredibly well fleshed out and the art by Barnaby Bagenda is a sight to behold especially his use of the 9 panel grid. Omega Men is certainly a modern classic.
