I don't usually read romances. I had initially gotten the books in the series that this belongs to for my mother, but the pioneering theme sounded interesting & one day when I found myself needing to have something to read, I picked up the first book in the series. I found it interesting enough that I read this one also & I might read more in the series as time goes by. The books are very well written, with well defined characters & interesting plot. They read easily & are what I call "gentle" books, with no real tragedy, sex, or blood & guts, but with enough suspense to keep me wondering what the next chapter will bring. I found the portrayal of the pioneering lifestyle to be a fascinating glimpse of what life must have been like "back then", with very down-to-earth, pragmatic characters populating the story. This is a Christian romance, so there's a healthy dose of religious thinking (more so in this book than the first one), but it's not presented in a "preachy" way, but rather as just the way the people go about their lives. It's there, but just as part of the story, not overriding the story.

This is very well written. I loved every passing page. I read it so fast though and went right on to the next and read that one as fast. These are great books with a strong Biblical Salvation message and great story telling qualities. She is well versed on Canadian towns, cities, provinces and wildernesses. Her knowledge of the Canadian Indians is splendid and well worth the read. I love the characterization of Wynn and his new wife. I love the fact that there is not a whiff of sex or bad language. How refreshing to get away from the titillating nonsense of SO many books written today. They seem to be written for shock value and not with the true values and with the sense of a well-written fiction novel. I highly recommend these books....all six.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great follow up to When Calls the Heart #1 in this series. The development of the characters of Wynn and Elizabeth are so exciting and I love the story. Jeanette Oke is a great writer and she makes you become friends with the characters. I began to think of them as family. I cried with Elizabeth when she couldn't have a child. You could feel her pain it was so well developed. It was great to experience the loss and gain that Elizabeth had of her faith. It made me realize, as Elizabeth did, that God is there and he allows some things to happen that we can't understand. It is our duty to trust and believe that he will make things right in the end. He did make things right with Elizabeth once she trusted him. The over all development of this book and the ones in this series are so full of developing characters. You learn things about Wynn and his faith. You learns things about Elizabeth and her struggle to have an enduring faith. You see how God is always there for us to keep learning about him. You learn how hard it was for Elizabeth to trust God when others got pregnant and she couldn't. I love the fact that Wynn never lost faith. He always believed God and God was there for him. Again this is a great book.

When Comes the Spring is the 2nd book in the Canadian West Series by Janette Oke. I loved this story! I found it more interesting than the first in the series, although I liked that story as well. The second book has so much more going on throughout it. I loved the beginning where Elizabeth learns to submit to her husband about wearing pants to climb the mountain. As a woman who does not wear pants, I felt her pain! But, her husband was right! She could not have climbed that mountain successfully in a skirt. Mostly, though, she learned to trust Wynn. He was only trying to protect her and that is a basic theme of the Bible. Protection comes when we obey authority. First, I loved that they trusted in God. I love the way the author helped Nimmie find Jesus and the Bible Studies. I am amazed at the hardships that this prim and proper lady from the East conquers. I felt for her! I lived on a farm and I know just how hard times can get if you don't have water. I experienced some of these hardships but not as difficult as Elizabeth had it. I'm in love with her "Mountie". What a dream man. His love for Elizabeth exemplifies God's love for the church. I thoroughly enjoyed Elizabeth's struggles to "talk" to the Indians through sign language and a word here and there. Her friendship with Nimmie, the English speaking Indian friend opened her heart to other people and their cultures. Excellent book and well-written as all of Oke's books are. Enjoy!Dawn Kurtz, author of the Christian novel: Secret of the Mexican Doll

I chose the 5 star rating because the writer of this book deserves it. No doubt I will never meet Janette Oke in this life but I have no doubt that we will meet in the place the risen Jesus has gone to prepare for those who love him and are called according to His purpose. Janette's writings are just another reason to look forward to eternity with Jesus. It is apparent that she writes from a heart where the Holy Spirit dwells. Never have I found anything inappropriate in her writings. I thank God for that.

I love these books.I really do. They are sweet stories. My biggest criticism is that Wynn is too good to be true. We see all of Elizabeth's character flaws, but Wynn is just a superhero. He had perfect judgement, faith, skills. He can do anything and never makes a mistake. It's just not realistic and gets old sometimes. That being said, I totally have a crush on Wynn.

The story is well written and holds ones attention easily. Elizabeth and Wynn begin their new life in the North and this book is about the trip there and the 1st year. In true Elizabeth fashion, she is much stronger than she's ever thought. The Norths challenges are many and the Delaney couple must become true members of the community, even with the difficulty of not having a common language even.Don't miss this book!!!

Then winter was rough and Elizabeth was strong and she was use to it. I give her a lot of credit myself I would gave up. I rate this with five stars because I could not put it down.
