What this book is:* it covers North American trees (including some that are tropical)* it shows the trees shapes with and without leaves showing just the branches (not all are shown both ways, but many are)* it provides useful tips on how to draw the branches of different species of trees - showing how different species' branches grow in different ways (eg: elm trees have branches that split out from the same place on the trunk, oak trees have branches that are massive and grow out of the main trunk at various points along its length, etc.)* it gives the names of trees, and can be used as a very rough field guide for quickly identifying trees from a distance, but not very well* it gives a few very basic drawing and compositional techniques, such as creating drawings with different element placement* it provides in-depth guides for the beginning artist on how to compose the drawing from basic outlines to the finished look, it does this very well, and is highly suitable as an instructional book for beginners. What this book is not:* it is not a comprehensive guide to North American trees* it does not provide in-depth details such as the shapes of leaves and the appearance up-close of bark for all of the trees, just for a few* it has no color images - just grayscale*
If you are a sketch artist who wants a book of pencil-drawn trees to use as a reference, this book is great. If you are a beginner who wants to learn to draw trees from scratch, this book is not for you. Each sketch in this book shows preliminary outlines next to finished sketches with no roadmap on how to get from point A to point B.
Drawing trees is my downfall. This small book is SOOO good!!!! I cannot say enough about how well it is written and how easy it is to understand what to do for many different varieties of trees. If you're a beginning artist and struggling with drawing trees, as I was, you will love this book!!! It is truly worth far more than you will pay for it.
It is a nicely done book although I had expected more exercises. The exercises in the text are very helpful. I just wish there had been more of them. The best use of this book would be to duplicate the illustrations as closely as you can and repeat. It will make you look more closely at trees which will improve the ones you draw.
I am a wannabe artist....have no drawing ability of my own but I can copy fairly well. In trying to draw trees, I started looking at trees, I mean really looking at them and realizing how intricately different each one is. This book explains and shows this difference. So after drawing many trees, all showing that I am no artist, I ordered this wonderful book, followed the easy instructions and not meaning to brag, but my very first tree was beautiful and it was not nearly as hard as I have always made it to be.So I definitely recommend this book. It is a winner!! I wish it was available in actual book form as well.
Drawing Trees by Victor Perard This book, from 1955, is a bit dated, but just a bit. It's still a good primer on approaching the rendering of trees, whether as background, foreground or main focus. A big plus (imho) is that it guides the artist toward making realistic trees – as opposed to the Disney-ish trees many artists seem willing to settle for.
I rarely do graphite sketches, my medium is watercolor. Realistic tree branches are very difficult for me and this little book is going to help me improve. I found it to be very useful for me and I am going to use it as a reference for drawing trees.
I purchased it because I found, late in life, that I could draw. However, I couldn't draw a tree to save my life, at least not an authentic looking one. After reading a few pages of instruction, and following them, I tried it, to my delight a tree appeared! It wasn't perfect, yet still very good!I've since been feverishly practicing this art, even looking on line for example s of various trees to perfect my craft. Since my goal is watercolor landscapes I should probably know how to draw a tree! I think it's a great purchase! God bless!
