If you were like me, a child growing up in Southern California in the 1950’s, then you may have felt as if you were in “The Disney Decade”. The studio was back in business after the WWII slump, and their animation techniques had hit a peak. Besides the Disneyland TV show, we could also tune into The Mickey Mouse Club (hour-long shows!) as well as Zorro. Disneyland opened, and appeared to be the physical manifestation of everything we had loved about the Disney animated features. It was a very busy time for one of the leading film studios to flower forth, in many branches of the entertainment industry.In my hometown of Carlsbad, California, several elementary schools provided basic lessons in drawing, taught by a member of the Walt Disney studio. At our school, he taught us by way of closed-circuit television, from a small studio in the back of the principal’s office. This convinced me even more that I was indeed at the right place, in the right time.This book is exhilarating for me. All the images bring up an emotional response. The photographs of the Mouseketeers remind me of the many happy hours I spent enjoying their adventures. The artwork is spectacular, and there is plenty of it. There’s a chapter on Disneyland, The Disneyland Hotel, The World’s Fair, and on and on. It’s a joy to see my memories given such a loving testament.

I absolutely hate having to write reviews like this for what's otherwise a beautifully illustrated and well-researched book. But some of the writing and editing was so poor that I had to pass comment on it precisely because for a book this well put together in every other respect, it should've been better. Some examples:1. There's a kind of scatterbrained way in which the book is written and organized. The first chapter seems as though it had originally been meant to be an introduction or a preface (it gives an overview of Disney's career and legacy). But then in the second chapter, it goes back to the 1940s.2. Is this supposed to be about Walt Disney as visionary futurist, or just a complete list of all his post WW2 projects in a "phoenix rising from the ashes" narrative? If it's supposed to be about his vision for the future, why does it cover topics that have nothing much to do with this? (The Lone Ranger, a failed ski lodge, a music studio?) Don't get me wrong--I think this is all great information in and of itself but I don't get what that has to do with the book's overarching theme of Disney being a futurist.3. Chapter breaks are done in an inconsistent way. Sometimes chapters are self-contained, dedicated to one specific project. Sometimes they're multiple chapters dedicated to the same project. To make matters worse, when the chapters break mid-subject, there's nothing in the opening paragraphs of the new chapter to connect it with the previous one. For example, the chapter on Monsanto thoroughly confused me initially because I thought the previous chapter was a self-contained chapter on Disneyland. It took me awhile to register that the Monsanto chapter was picking up where the last one left off.4. The writing was very fuzzy in spots. For example, the chapter on Monsanto opens out with the vague pronouncement that "Monsato hosted four attractions over time." Who or what was Monsanto? Hosted exhibits where? I actually had to look this up on the internet. (Monsanto was a chemical company that ran exhibits at Disneyland's Tomorrowland section between 1957 and 1967.) Granted, by the second page, it became self-evident. But really, this should've been explained from the very start.5. Another example of the book's fuzzy writing: "Diane Disney Miller said it was her dad's lawyer..." Who was her father? The book mentions Roy Disney so much that she could very well have been his daughter for all we know.6. Some of the idioms were either incorrect or just plain weird. The book says that Disney "grinded his gears" to "jump start his studio." "Grind one's gears" means to be annoyed by something, and it's not a real expression. It's a catchphrase from Family Guy. Plus, putting "grinding gears" and "jump starting" in one sentence is a textbook example of "mixing metaphors." (It mixes gears with jumper cables.)7. Another example of poor usage: the book writes about Disney having to "double back", but the usage of it is so rare and seems to have been used incorrectly. (Double back means to physically retrace your steps.)8. The editor kept throwing in a "[,]" to add commas to quoted material that didn't include them in a list series. It's not incorrect to leave out a comma before the last item. The editor should've realized this; common sense tells you that if all the quotes from esteemed publications from the past didn't include a comma, they weren't wrong to leave it out.9. There were very few details about EPCOT, which is one of the reasons why I got the book on the first place. You'd think that a book that spent so much effort setting up Walt Disney as a futurist would've covered EPCOT in much greater detail. That was as close to his grand vision as you can get but there's very little about the project except photographs, illustrations and a brief mention about how Disney acquired the land to build it and Walt Disney World.I know I'm sounding like some pathetic grammar Nazi or something but that's not my intent. It's just that the writing was so slipshod that it stopped me in my tracks. I don't know what happened here but I've noticed a trend recently where publishers have begun thinking that because coffee table books are all about looking at pretty pictures, they can just get away with lax writing and editing. Sorry, but many of us do read the text and yes, we do care when the writing is not up to par. This book was clearly not ready for prime time and would've benefited from additional editing and tightening up. As it stands, the writing is blog/website quality. Actually, no-- it's a little worse than either because I've seen writing on some blogs and websites that were better quality than what was in this book.

This book is really fun. The photos are great, and the captions bring them to life. I wish the book was a little more substantial - but TOTALLY worth it!

I’m very familiar with the Disney studios history and there were many surprises in this book. Great design and artwork, great writing, and a great addition to Disney lore.

Lavishly illustrated, and well set out. It's everything a book about Disney should be.
