Pretty good book of the Zombie genre. Bought it knowing there is a cast of a dozen characters to follow. Generally I much prefer one main protagonist I can get to know and root for. The characters are pretty interesting in the main part. However, with a dozen there are some just found either less interesting or less likeable. So, if you are like me and want a main character, this book does not really have it, that I could see. If you like tracking a flock of people, you will like it better.

When I opened this book, it opened to the dedication page, and in 4 short lines, there were 2 errors; so I really didn't think I would like this book. Boy, was I wrong!Yes, it is a zombie book, and follows the typical format - zombies! Shoot them in the head! - but, that's the only similarity. Tony does a really great job with his character development! He acknowledges that there are a lot of them to keep track of, but I really didn't have a difficult time with it. Each character is distinctly different, and really very realistic. There were some that I liked and some... not so much. I think, having read the first, that Tony has a surprise for us coming in the next book or so. I can't wait to find out what's next.I definitely recommend this book.

So I am a little torn in rating this book. On one hand the characters are extremely well written. They are believable and intriguing and you come to care about them in a short number of pages.I came into the book expecting a lot of characters. I like a lot of characters so knowing there were a lot of characters did not put me off. What I didn't expect was a constant presentation of individual characters a chapter at a time. I think it was fifteen chapters in before we return to visit a character. The best thing about this book - the characters are realistic and believable, and a great mix of good and bad.The worst thing about this book - so many amazing characters that I started to gain interest in only to reach the end of the chapter and never see them again...for a very long time. The writing is of excellent quality, and story flow improved once we got all the introductions complete, but in my opinion, just too many people to juggle at the start.

Hell on Earth is a different kind of zombie book where the story follows a dozen different characters on the dawn of the apocalypse. Since every chapter is dedicated to a specific character and his dilemma during that time, jumping back and forth seemed quite confusing, at times. It took me almost 50% of the way through before I got a handle on the characters and what's happened to them up until that point. Reminds me of the movie, "Groundhog Day", but in this story, there's a bit of repetition as many of the characters react and do the same things during that first day.I do have to admit though that the author's descriptive and poetic prose almost had me puking up my dinner on several occasions in the second half of the book...no other zombie author has accomplished this until "Hell on Earth". I have a much clearer picture now at the end of book one of how the series might progress. I do plan on getting the next book in the series...but have to wait until my stomach returns from rehab before starting it. The author also shares his witticism throughout the book where I've suddenly laughed out loud and scared my wife in the bed next to me. Worth a read!

The world doesn’t end with a bang or with a whimper. It ends with the flick of the wrist. The world ends on a hot summer day. People are getting sick with a cold or the flu, nothing worse than a summer cold. First they get the flu then they die or do they? The dead won’t stay dead they are turning into zombies.Hell on Earth starts out with a bang when farmer Wim decides to take a trip into town for some supplies. While he is shopping Wim starts to crave chocolate ice cream and decides to check out the big freezer. Well he finds his ice cream alright but he soon forgets all about his ice cream when he runs into the store owner’s dead family locked in the freezer.Another one of the characters was a young girl, Ramey, an eighteen-year-old trying to finish high school online. Ramey lives with her drug addicted mother. As the world ends Ramey decides to go look for her father as she has nothing else to do now but maybe kill a few zombies. In Hell on Earth we meet a whole bunch of other characters like Mitch the son of a senator, Grady a man with a ten-year autistic son, Josiah, Bundy a prisoner on his way to the hospital when the world ended, Aben a traveling man, Juli a mother of twins plus a few more that we get to meet in this introduction to the Life of the Dead world. We get to see the world through quite a few characters. I liked getting to see how the world ended through more than one character and wondering how or if their lives were going to intertwine.Hell on Earth is a great introduction to the Life of the Dead world. I loved getting to know all the characters and trying to figure out how they were all going to meet and where they would meet or if they would meet.I loved all the blood and gore. I loved seeing so many zombies and people getting their throat ripped out. While I loved Hell on Earth I did have one little problem with it like I would have loved to see more zombies but I also liked getting the back stories on all the characters as well and learning who each character was before the world ended.I love me some zombies and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the next book in the Life of the Dead world Road of the Damned. Road of the Damned is next on my list so check back later for my review of Road of the Damned. My favorite show on TV is The Walking Dead and I love Stephen King’s The Stand so once I read the summary for Hell on Earth and saw that it had been described as The Walking Dead meets The Stand I knew I had to read it.I you like zombies and the TV show The Walking Dead then you are going to love Hell on Earth. Pick up your copy to day to begin your journey into the Life of the Dead world.
